Description: Even in districts known nationally for strong data use, educators are no more than 48% accurate when interpreting data (U.S. Department of Education Office of Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development, 2009, 2011). This presentation sheds light on a culprit often overlooked: the data system and reports educators are using. These reporting tools can either help or hurt educators’ understanding of the data, and can thus either help or hurt students affected by data-informed decisions. The presentation summarizes data display research that demands more from data systems and reports in terms of design and analysis guidance, and outlines specific criteria educator leaders can use to ensure they provide data to staff in ways that assist analysis accuracy. This includes the researcher’s own quantitative study findings, which will be shared along with templates, standards, and other tools to assist attendees.
